A Weekend to Remember: Our Experience at the Shutter Speed Film Festival
Two days of independent cinema, creative connections, unforgettable experiences, and a very special win.
Some film festivals are about films. Others are about the people, the connections, and the experiences that remind you of why you fell in love with filmmaking in the first place.
The Shutter Speed Film Festival brought it all together.
We had an incredible time attending this year's festival, and it was an experience worth sharing.
DAY ONE: A WARM WELCOME AND A GREAT NIGHT OF FILM
Walking into the festival, we were immediately welcomed by the charming local theater atmosphere and a team that genuinely made us feel appreciated as filmmakers.
The festival even greeted attendees with a wonderful swag bag filled with treats, a pen, a notepad, stickers, and a Shutter Speed Film Festival cup. It's little details like these that make an event feel special, and it was clear a lot of thought went into making everyone feel welcome.
The first night brought a great lineup of films, with several standouts that caught our attention:
- Strange Trip – A father-and-son journey involving a little recreational adventure.
- Justice Hill, Texas – A double-crossing Western with a story that caught our attention.
- Dobrina – An animated music video that added something different to the evening's lineup.
We also got a fun surprise when we spotted our friend Erik Anderson on the big screen, starring in a music video! It's always exciting to see familiar faces move into new creative projects.
After the screenings, we enjoyed the Q&A sessions, followed by a few rounds of trivia that brought everyone together and made for a fun end to the first night.
DAY TWO: FILMMAKING, CONNECTIONS, AND A BIG SURPRISE
Day two kicked off with another block of films, including the feature Schrodinger by Ben Foster and the short Twisted Sisters by The Olivias.
But the day had even more in store.
Following the screenings, the festival hosted a networking event and a Directors and Actors Workshop at Reel Coffee House, a fantastic movie theater-themed coffee shop. Gabe, representing Retro Matador Studios, and I grabbed some delicious coffee and joined the workshop.
Director Arthur Muhammad and Nikki Dixon, President of SAG-AFTRA Dallas, hosted the session.
This was one of my favorite parts of the festival. Directors and actors discussed their individual approaches to filmmaking, their creative styles, and what makes collaboration between both sides of the camera successful.
“Filmmaking is a collaborative art, and hearing different perspectives, exchanging ideas, and connecting with other creatives is just as valuable as watching the films themselves.”
After the workshop, we headed into the final block of screenings, which delivered some more memorable films.
One standout was Exhale, featuring a wish-granting demon with a dark twist. It was a great addition to the lineup! Also Cinephiles, a twisted tale of love and film!
AND THE AWARD GOES TO...
As the festival moved into its award ceremony, we were excited to see the filmmakers and their work recognized.
Then came a moment I'll never forget.
I'm incredibly honored and grateful to receive this recognition. This was my very first screenplay, and seeing it travel through festivals, connect with other filmmakers, and now receiving this award has been an amazing experience.
What started as an idea inspired by a frustrating day at work turned into something much bigger than I ever expected. Having the Shutter Speed Film Festival recognize the screenplay is something I'll always appreciate.
Thank you to the festival for giving my work a place to be seen and celebrated. It means a great deal to me.
We wrapped up the weekend with red-carpet photos, celebrating the filmmakers, artists, and everyone who helped make this event such a memorable experience.
A BIG THANK YOU TO SHUTTER SPEED
I want to extend a special thank you to festival founder Fatimah Jawad and festival director Aaliyah Muhammad for putting together such a welcoming and enjoyable festival.
From the screenings and thoughtful hospitality to the networking opportunities, workshops, Q&As, and awards ceremony, it was clear how much care went into creating an environment where independent filmmakers could come together and celebrate their work.
Thank you to the volunteers, organizers, hosts, filmmakers, actors, and everyone behind the scenes who helped make this weekend possible.
And congratulations to all the filmmakers whose work was featured throughout the festival. It was a pleasure sharing the experience with you.
If you're an independent filmmaker looking for a festival that celebrates creativity, encourages collaboration, and makes filmmakers feel welcome, I absolutely recommend keeping the Shutter Speed Film Festival on your radar for next year.
We'll certainly be keeping an eye out for what's next!
Until the next screening, the next story, and the next adventure...
